Claudia and Quentin Location, Clothing and other ideas

For the location for my shoot, I decided that I wanted to do it outside to make it look like it could be on the grounds of a high school.

I felt that the park near where I live and University was good as it has a small skate park in and I felt this fit in the the grungy 90's vibe of the shoot. I also decided to take some next to the building next to it as it is covered in graffiti and I liked how it looked abandoned.

For the clothing, I wanted it to be quite plain to focus on the make-up and wounds I was going to put on them. For Claudia, I decided on a white V-neck top with dark jeans and trainers. For Quentin I decided on a ripped, black T-shirt and dark jeans and shoes.

I also decided that for the hair, I wanted Claudia's to be messy, like she hadn't looked after herself or her appearance for a long time. Because my model for Quentin is blond, I thought it would be a good idea to also put fake blood in his hair, because my phrase for him was 'Red Rave' and I really wanted to focus on showing how much blood there would be in a shooting through Quentin's appearance.

I decided to do three bullet holes on Quentin's chest. These will be done using wax and liquid latex.

Quentin Facechart

The facechart for Quentin is quite plain. This is mainly because I wanted to focus on the bullet holes on his body.

Claudia Facechart

I wanted Claudia to look quite grungy and messy, with the eyes looking like she's been crying and her make-up has run, I thought the best way to do this would be to use the grey in my MAC palette and smudge it around and under her eyes. I also wanted her to have quite a lot of blood on her, with the idea of it being Quentin's blood. I also just wanted a plain red lip, using the Kryolan Lip palette.

I decided as well to create a wound by the side of her eye, using was and liquid latex, that Claudia got in the shooting, possibly through Quentin pushing her out of the way of getting shot.

Inspiration Behind Murder House: Columbine

The school shooting that takes place in Murder House is a big part of the story and this was partially inspired by real events. The Columbine High School shooting took place on 20th April 1999 when two students, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold shot and killed nine people at their school and shares a lot of similarities with what takes place in the show.

At one point they entered the library and shot students in there, just like Tate does in the series, and it's the only part of the shooting we actually see him carry out.

Eric and Dylan started shooting at 11:19 am and carried on until 12:08, when they both committed suicide by shooting themselves. The shooting was covered internationally and is perhaps the most famous school massacre in the world. The CCTV pictures were widely publicised:

Murder house appears to have based parts of Tate's shooting on some thing that really happened at Columbine, for example, when one of the ghosts of the victims Stephanie appears, she tells Violet that Tate asked her if she believed in God before he killer her. This supposedly really happened to Cassie Barnell before she was killed, with rumours that she was the inspiration behind the songs 'This is Your Time' by Michael W. Smith and 'Cassie' by Flyleaf.

Due to the devastation caused by the Columbine Massacre, there were some negative reactions to the show including this story line, with Yahoo! News saying of the show that "that's the kind of silly, ultimately empty scare that American Horror Story is best at. A school shooting is not that." and that "there was a particular event, or events, that they were trying to directly evoke and that's just cruel."

American Horror Story: Murder House

American Horror Story is a series that was first aired in 2011. There are currently five seasons that have been released, each taking place in a different time period with different characters and a different story line. The thing that is unique about this series is the fact that although each season is completely different, the same actors tend to be used, leading to a big cult following.

The season that have currently been released are:

  • Murder House - The first season, telling the story of a dysfunctional family who move into a house they are unaware is haunted and meeting lots of people that they are not aware are dead.
  • Asylum - Based around an insane asylum in the 1960s, showing experiements that went on their and the attempt to find a serial killer.
  • Coven - Based around a boarding school that is actually a coven of witches in New Orleans.
  • Freak Show - Based around a 1960s freakshow in Florida, just around the time that they had lost almost all their popularity. It tells the story of the people who live at the show and how other people treat them.
  • Hotel - based in a hotel named 'The Cortez', showing the horrific history of the hotel and it's occupants, as well as present day killings. This was the first series that Lady GaGa has starred in.
I have chosen to focus on Murder House for my project as I feel this season ties in best with the brief that we've been given.

The series takes place in present day, with a family moving in to the new house they've bought, dubbed 'Murder House', although they are unaware of this A married couple, Vivienne and Ben, move into the house with their only daughter Violet after Vivienne suffers a miscarriage and Ben has an affair in an attempt to bring their family back together.

Ben, a psychiatrist, begins seeing a teenage boy at his home named Tate, who he believes is mentally unwell. Tate and Violet soon meet and are drawn together despite Ben not wanting them to have anything to do with each other. This relationship progresses and Violet soon starts to notice strange things about Tate and about her house.

It later turns out that a lot of people who are frequent guest or visitors at the house are in fact the ghost of people who have died there and cannot leave. This turns out to be the same for Tate and Violet soon finds out that he was shot by the police after carrying out a shooting at his high school, killing multiple students, who had previously confronted Tate and Violet, with Violet thinking it was a halloween prank (in the series ghosts can only leave the place they were killed on the night of
halloween).

While watching the series, I always felt that I wanted to know more about the school shooting and hat had happened to the students afterwards, so I started thinking about how I could use this idea with the brief. I decided that I wanted to do victims in the school shooting for my Claudia and Quentin, with Claudia being a survivor but Quentin, her boyfriend, being shot and killed.
