Mina Facechart

For my design, I knew I wanted to do Mina after she has been turned into a vampire and been burnt by Van Helsing. I decided to do this by including the burn on her head after she is touched with the Communion bread. 

I thought about having the burn in the middle of her head, more like it would be in the book. But after a few designs I decided that It would be very hard to do when using make-up because of the continuity and because it was harder to make it look real because of the positioning, so I decided to do it closer to the side of the head.

I knew I wanted quite a dark contour on it as I wanted her to look very dramatic and for parts of the make-up very dark as this is a more traditional vampire look. I tested a couple of products to try this out, for example the black colour in the Supracolour palette, but this was very difficult to blend due to how dark it was and ended up making the face look quite grey. I decided a powder was a better way to go as it would be easier for me to build it up. I decided to use the grey and dark shades in my MAC palette to do this. 

As shown in the facechart, at first I wanted to use face eyelashes and focus mainly on them for the eyes but found that this looked to modern and as I'm creating the character from the book's time setting, I decided maybe a smokey and slightly messy look was a better idea.

I decided to also use the MAC palette for this to create a smokey effect.

I thought about colouring the lips in black or dark red as I felt this would go very well with the vampire theme, but decided that I really wanted the main focus of the look to be the burn and that having a bold lip might take away from this. Because of this, I decided to keep the lips the same colour as the base of the face, as this would give a more 'dead' look and probably make more sense in relation to the character.

Claudia and Quentin Ideas

Once I decided that I wanted to do Claudia and Quentin for my characters, I started thinking about what television series I should do I thought about possibly doing Bates Motel, as I am a big fan of the series but struggled to come up with what I could do for the characters and what make-up effects I would be able to do for them.Due to this, I decided on American Horror Story, not only because I am a big fan but also I felt that there was a lot more I could do with the characters.

The brief for our characters was quite similar to a story line in the first series of American Horror Story, Murder House. This is due to the fact that a teenage girl, Violet, moved into a new house with her family and is very into the idea of ghosts and the paranormal. She meets a boy named Tate who she eventually ends up with but he turns out to be dead, quite similar to the idea of being imaginary.

I decided I wanted to do this series but I did not want my characters to just replace Tate and Violet, I wanted to add them into the series instead so I thought about different ways I could do this. The character of Tate was killed after the police shot him due to his part in a school shooting. So I thought about the idea of making my characters two of his victims.

I decided that Quentin could've been shot and killed in the shooting and that his girlfriend Claudia also went to the school and witnessed the shooting but survived, and couldn't accept his death so she believes he is still alive and with her even though he is dead.

For this reason, I picked the phrase 'Red Rave' for Quentin, as it echoes the idea of lots of red and blood in a shooting. I chose 'Save Us' for Claudia, not only because she was a victim of the shooting and wanted everyone to be saved, but also to show how she and Quentin are stuck in this weird reality and she longs for things to go back to the way they were.

The shooting tales place in the 1990's, so I wanted to keep this in mind when creating the characters. I liked the idea of them being quite a 'grungy' couple so liked the idea of going to a messy hair and make-up look for Claudia, also to make her look like she has been crying and not really taken care of herself, and the idea of Quentin having bullet wounds from the shooting.

The original idea behind the shooting in Murder House was the Columbine shooting, so I as to look into and do more research on this.

Claudia, Quentin and Mrs. Laderman Brief

For our brief, we were told that we had to pick a Gothic Horror television series and then create two characters and looks for it. We had a choice of two of three characters:

• Claudia - a teenage girl obsessed with gothic horror who lives inside her own fantasy world and is very disassociated with reality.
• Quentin - Claudia's imaginary boyfriend that she believes is real and alive. She is very protective over him and he wants her to be happy,
• Mrs. Laderman - the next door neighbour, around middle aged.

I decided to create Claudia and Quentin for my characters as I felt there was more I could with these characters and their relationship. 

We were then given a list of television shows we could choose that our characters would be more. The options were:

I decided to base mine around American Horror Story. This is mainly due to the fact that it is my favourite show and I have watched it multiple times so felt very familiar with the show and felt that I would more confidently create my characters.

We were then given a list of words and had to pick one for each character to base our look and story for them on. The words were:
